map of Zeeland and West Brabant ca. 1600 ADVII-A. Adriaen Anthonissen van Agthoven, laborer. Born on 5 aug. 1793 and baptized on 8 sept. 1793 in Nieuwerkerk, on the island Duiveland, Zeeland, Netherlands. Son of Anthony van Agthoven and Huigje Suiker. Died in Noordgouwe, Zeeland on 13 march 1837.
Marries in Nieuwerkerk on 28 aug. 1816 Adriana Braam, born on 18 jan.1793 and baptized on 27 jan. 1793, died in Noordgouwe, Zeeland, Netherlands on 9 jan.1837, daughter of Mattheus Braam and Maatje Lemson.

After the death of both their parents in 1837 the children were taken in into the family of their mother's brother Cornelis Braam, married to Willemina de Jonge, in Nieuwerkerk. They all emigrated in 1846 with the children Van Agthoven as the first emigrants from Nieuwerkerk to North America, with the destination of Evansville, Indiana, USA. Giljam and Maatje van Agthoven followed them in 1850. Apparently they settled in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA.

  2. Mattheus van Agthoven, born Nieuwerkerk 10 nov.1817. See VIII-A. He emigrated in 1846 to the USA.
  3. Anthony van Agthoven, born Nieuwerkerk 1 june 1822. See VIII-B. He emigrated in 1846 the USA.
  4. Giljam van Agthoven, born Nieuwerkerk 3 jan. 1825: See VIII-C. He emigrated in 1850 to the USA.
  5. Maatje van Agthoven, born Nieuwerkerk 24 febr.1827. She emigrated at the age of 23, spinner of profession, on 3 may1850 to the USA with her brother Giljam van Agthoven (and his wife and daughter).
  6. Huigje 'Huije' van Agthoven, born Nieuwerkerk 21 febr.1830. She emigrated in 1846 to the USA [Mentioned in the passengers records of the Ship "Chesapeake", leaving from of Rotterdam, and entered New Orleans Harbor on January 20,1847. The Captain was Clarke.] She died in 1861 at Cincinnati, Ohio (mentioned there as born in Newkerk, Holland in 1829 : the estimated year of birth). She married William Byl (born in 1817; died 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA). Children known: Adriana Byl (born 22 march 1852 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; died 16 march 1943 in Matton, Illinois, USA; she married George Henry Arend, born in Cincinnati, Ohio on 16 april 1853, son of William Edward Arend and Margaret auf der Heide).
  7. Maximilianus van Agthoven, born in Noordgouwe 15 oct. 1832. See VIII-D. Emigrated in 1846 to USA.
  8. Marinus van Agthoven, born Nieuwerkerk 16 may 1836, died Nieuwerkerk 10 july 1837.

VIII-A. Mattheus van Agthoven. Born in Nieuwerkerk 10 nov.1817, son of Adriaan Anthonissen van Agthoven and Adriana Braam. Emigrated with his brothers Anthony and Maximilianus and his sister Huijgje together with his uncle Cornelis Braams (and his wife Willemina de Jonge) in 1846 to the USA, with the destination Evansville, Indiana. [The Ship "Chesapeake" left out of Rotterdam and entered New Orleans Harbor on January 20, 1847. The Captain was Clarke.] He died in the USA after 1896:
SpaarndamM.van Agthoven is mentioned in the passengers list (#104) of the ship "Spaarndam" on 24 aug.1896 as a 79 year old man, coming from the harbour of Rotterdam, going to Cincinnati, Ohio, cooper of profession, US nationality, born in Holland, "intending protracted sojourn". [See www.ellisislandrecords.org : under Agthoven]
Apparently he did return once to the Netherlands (as he is the only van Agthoven mentioned in those records).
Matthew Van Agthoven is mentioned in the 1860 Census in Cincinnati, then 25(?) years old, together with (his wife) Elizabeth Van Agthoven, 30 yeras old in the 1860 Census of Cincinnati.

VIII-B. Anthony van Agthoven. Born in Nieuwerkerk 1 june 1822. Son of Adriaan Anthonissen van Agthoven and Adriana Braam. Emigrated with his brothers Mattheus and Maximilianus and his sister Huijgje together with his uncle Cornelis Braams (and his wife Willemina de Jonge) in 1846 to the USA, destination Evansville, Indiana. Anthonie Van Agthoven is mentioned in Ohio as a religious leader of the Reformed Church.

N.B. : There seems to be some inconsistencies in the data from the 1880 Ohio Census. Those of the 1860 Census seem to be correct (age of Anthony van Agthoven: so he knew very well his birthday). It seems to be quite possible that the data of the 1880 Census were not all taken in 1880 but also in the years after. If Anthony is truly 65 in that Census, then the data were taken in 1887 after june 9. Then the age of Nelia must be 57 in stead of 51 (as she is 30 in 1860. However it is possible that the age in 1860 was 24 in stead of 30: otherwise John would have been born when Nelia was 49, while 43 would be much more likely for a last child.). That would also mean that Harry van Agthoven was born in 1865, which would make him the same Harry van Agthoven, who died on 31 dec. 1950 at the age of 85 in Campbell, Kentucky.

"ANTHONY VAN AGTHOVEN, barrel manufacturer, was born in Holland in 1822, and came to America in 1848, landing at New Orleans with the intention of taking up his residence in St. Louis, but, being advised to come to Cincinnati, did so, and has made this city his home ever since. He has been engaged in his business for over forty years, formerly where the Southern Railroad Station now stands, but for the past, sixteen years at No. 187 Commerce street., where his main business is now located. Our subject was married, in 1854, to Nellie Dow, also a native of Holland, and they have had born to them seven children, four of whom are still living. VIII-C. Giljam van Agthoven, born in Nieuwerkerk 3 jan.1825. Son of Adriaan Anthonissen van Agthoven and Adriana Braam. Died in USA.
Emigrated, as farmer, on 9 juli 1850 from Rotterdam with the ship Heatherbell to the USA, with his wife Nettje van Agthoven (-Stouten), then 26 years old, and his sister Maatje van Agthoven, 23 years old and spinner of profession.
Married at Nieuwerkerk on 7 july 1849 Neeltje Stouten, born at Nieuwerkerk on 12 jan.1824, died in USA, daughter of Pieter Stouten and Janna Vane (Pieter Stouten emigrated in 1852 as widower to USA).
Children known:

  1. Adriaantje van Agthoven, born at Nieuwerkerk 2 april 1850 (she was not mentioned with her parents in the passenger records, possibly because she is a baby then). (She was mentioned however as Adrianna Agthoven , as immigrant into the USA in the immigration records between 1850 and 1874 among the Germans, together with Nett Agthoven, J.Agthoven en Mmaast Agthoven [See: www. genealogy.com under the name Agthoven]. Those must have be respectively Adriana van Agthoven, Neeltje van Agthoven-Stouten, Giljam van Agthoven en Maatje van Agthoven ).

Nultze (Neeltje?) van Agthoven married at Hamilton, Ohio on 16 june 1856 Jillis van den Doel. She might be the same person as Neeltje van Agthoven-Stouten, wife of Giljam van Agthoven, who might have died in Ohio around beginning of 1856.

VIII-D. Maximilianus van Agthoven. Born in Noordgouwe, Zeeland on 15 oct.1832. Son of Adriaan Anthonissen van Agthoven and Adriana Braam. Emigrated with his brothers Mattheus and Anthony and with his sister Huijgje together with their uncle Cornelis Braams and his wife Willemina de Jonge in 1846 to the USA, with destination Evansville, Indiana. He was then 14 years old. [The Ship "Chesapeake" left from Rotterdam and entered New Orleans Harbor on January 20,1847. The Captain was Clarke.] Must have died in USA. Mentioned in "Dutch in America".
Married to Margaret Franz, born Hesse, Kassel (D) 1843 .
His wife Margaret, born in 1843 in Hesse, Cassel (D), remarried ca. 1873 Charles Reifshider, from Hesse, Cassel, born in 1826, saloon keeper.
In 1880 they have a daughter Jane Reifshider, age 6 years.
Children known from the first marriage: in 1880 living in Newport, Campbell, Kentucky.

IX-A. Carolina 'Carrie' Van Agthoven, , born in 1863 in Ohio, died at Campbell, Kentucky, on 22 dec. 1925 at the age of 63 (so born in 1862/63). Data from Deaths Kentucky: vol.58, certificate 28517 / 1925 [see: www.rootsweb.com under Vanagthoven]
Carrie van Agthoven is mentioned in 1920 Census as resing in Campbell, Kentucky, and born in about 1863.

IX-B. Harry van Agthoven. Born 15 May 1865 at Cincinnati, Ohio in USA. Parents: Maximilianus van Agthoven and Margaret Franz. Died at the age of 85 at Campbell, Kentucky, USA on 31 dec.1950 where he then was living. [Kentucky Records vol. 54, certificate 26654, Death Volume 1950: from: www.Rootsweb.org].
Police Judge H. Van Agthoven is mentioned in 1907 as boardmember in Campbell, Newport, Kentucky when Southgate was established.

William van Agthoven is being mentioned in the 1920 Census as residing in Hamilton, Ohio, then 56 years old. In 1918 he is patrolman (police) in Cincinnati.
Married Anna Back 'Vanagthoven', 54 years old in the 1910 Census of Hamilton, Ohio.

X-A Rowland J. van Agthoven, son of Harry Van Agthoven and Emma Haefner. Died on 2 Sept. 1917 in a car accident (fractured skull). He was then PVT in the Army.
Mentioned in "Campbell County Casualty List" Campbell is located in Newport, Kentucky state, opposite of Cincinnati, Ohio across the river.
